The Birth of a Photographer

Cades Cove, Townsend, TN
10 years ago a guy I was dating bought me a camera for Christmas and every time this year I think of him and his wonderful gift.  He saw something in me that I didn't know yet and he brought it to life by a simple gift.  I never once photographed a person or anything of the sort.  I started out taking pictures of landscapes and animals.  I spent countless hours in the mountains taking photos. Not just any mountains, but some of the oldest mountains in the country, in my home state of Tennessee.  The Smoky Mountains became a second home, my go to spot when I needed to regroup or decompress.  It became my quite space where I could reconnect to myself and the earth.  I found myself in those mountains.

For many years I wanted so badly to move away from this state and seek out a different life.  In my eyes Tennessee was boring and backward.  But through the lens of a camera I fell in love with my state and the beauty it holds.  I began to see things that many of us take for granted and have forgotten.  I f
ound the beauty in the things we became accustomed to and no longer saw.  I began to learn the history of our region of East Tennessee, became even more immersed in our culture and lifestyle.  Our culture is like none other in the country or the state.  East Tennesseans are a breed all to their own and stand together through tough times.  We are the heart of this state.

Monday, we suffered from a huge heartbreak, we lost thousands of acres of our National Forest, close to 16,000 acres to one of the largest wildfires this year
.  People lost their homes, their businesses their pets, their families and everything they held dear to them.  14,000 people have been displaced and have yet to be able to return to see if their homes are still standing or not.  Not only has a wonderful community been effected but the whole region.  Many of us spent our weekends cruising the strip trolling for guys or girls back in high school because it was the cool thing to do back then, or we had family vacations to the great city of Gatlinburg.  It became a a part of us and our lives.  What most don't understand, especially those who have never been here, is how magical these mountains are and how much they become a part of your soul.  They seep into you without you knowing.

Many times I have left these mountains to go on trips, on of which was my recent trip to L.A.  Yes I loved L.A., so much that I considered moving, but the minute my eyes landed on those mountains as I flew over Alcoa, my heart said, "No, this is your home."  You can take the mountain girl out of the mountains, but you can't take the mountains out of the girl.  Mountain Strong and Proud.

Photographer Etiquette On Current Events

As I sit here at work,  yes I have a real job, I'm watching Facebook and all its glory.  Sometimes I wonder why people do the things they do then I realize its not always worth energy trying to figure it out.  ðŸ˜‚   However, one thing that I see over and over again that kind of grinds my gears.  So this is the Atomic City Photography's version of "What Really Grinds My Gears" by Peter Griffin from Family Guy. What really grinds my gears is photographers who forget they are running a business.  Face it social media is what gets us noticed and our main means of communicating to the world "HERE I AM LOOK AT MY WORK I AM AWESOME!!!"  We all do it and that's how we promote ourselves and our work.  Its how we draw inspiration by seeing others and their images.  Social media can be a good thing, a great spring board and a great way to inspire others. What I have been seeing lately is too many folks who are photographers or any other type of bus...

New Faces

In March I went to a shoot out called Click for Pets and we raised enough money to sponsor elderly dogs and cats at a local animal shelter.  Anyone who knows me, knows that I don't participate in group events like this and I rarely step outside of the pinup box.  However, this year I told myself that I was going to break out of the mold and start doing things that are not of my norm.   I had the honor of working with Izzy.  Not only is she a beautiful young lady, but she has something about her that just captives you and draws you in and you just have to shoot her.  I am very happy to have been able to have work with her and its been such an amazing journey so far with this girl.  I can't wait to shoot with her more in the future.   Plus, she has a cool mom!! She is one of the most creative people I know and she's always brainstorming for the next big idea for Izzy's shoots.  Often times you'll find her making crowns with beads, lugging wardro...

Nashville Boogie

It's almost here!!   Nashville Boogie will be here before you know it and I can't wait!!  May 18th -21st, with an awesome pre-bowl party on the 17th! This will be year 3 and I'm just as excited now as I was the first year.   Muddy Roots Music produces the show and brings the masses a weekend full of great rockabilly music to appease your ears.  This is one of the largest music events of the season and it shouldn't be missed.  And not to mention the venue is one of the most gorgeous places in the South East.  Walk around in the atriums of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel , kick your heels up and relax near a waterfall, or go take a dance lesson or two.   There are several places to eat inside the hotel and room service of course, but be prepared to spend a little bit of money if you do.  But, if push comes to shove walk over to the mall and eat at the RainForest Cafe or Johnny Rockets.  Plus, Waffle House is just up the road for that late nig...
